Tracking devices with miniaturization and recent technological developments
The now-available technology provides an unprecedented opportunity to collect data on small species. Miniaturised Ornitela tags weigh nearly 3 grams, which enables tracking individuals down to 80 grams to collect classically over 100 positions daily, recording movements and behaviours of the tracked bird across the annual cycle. Data is transmitted by the GSM network.
Tracking devices are programmed to collect records following standardised frequencies, such as one position and other sensor data every 10 or 30 minutes. This comprehensive approach documents the complete daily timetables of the tracked individuals, including night and day, providing a wealth of information that goes well beyond what direct observations can report.
