Northern Lapwing
The lapwing is the most abundant shorebird species studied in HABITRACK (Delany et al. 2009). The population index for the Lapwing, combining data from 28 European countries, has declined by 60% between 1980 and 2021 (PECBMS). This steep decline would have been linked to a fall in breeding productivity and possibly intense hunting in countries like France (EU management plan European Commission 2009a). The species breeds in a variety of inland open habitats, especially in farmland and grassland. Wet meadows and unimproved grassland provide the best breeding habitat (Keller et al., 2020). The species is among the most studied farmland birds in Europe, but, to our knowledge, no precise studies on habitat uses or selection have been produced by telemetry.
